'Why blue is the new green' - blue is stimulating for the mind and green is eco-friendly'

In a previous year’s laboratories and sterile, highly sensitive workplaces were dominated by white equipment and panelling. This is about to change though, as new laboratories and old ones are moving to using colours to brighten up, increase productivity and assist with mental health.

The colour design of a laboratory is changing. A recent study highlighted that colour could have a huge effect on human perception, emotion and performance. For example, colours with a longer wavelength (red and yellow) appear to have a stimulating effect on a person’s emotion and performance. Whereas shorter wavelength colours (blue and green) can have a calming effect which reduced human mistakes and can improve the overall aesthetic of the laboratory. Issues occur when you have environments with the same colour; especially white, white environments have been seen to show that employees make more mistakes than laboratories with colours.
