The Differences Between Class I, II & III Microbiological Safety Cabinets

There are three classes of microbiological safety cabinets, and each one offers a different level of protection. Here, we look at the main differences between Class I, II and III microbiological safety cabinets to help you to work out which one you require for your laboratory.

Class I microbiological safety cabinets

Class I microbiological safety cabinets offer protection for the person using the cabinet and the environment surrounding them but doesn’t protect the material that they’re working with. This means that they do not keep the sample safe from contamination which can limit their usage depending on what you need your cabinet for. They can be used for work that requires Biosafety Level 1, 2 or 3 containment, the same as a Class II cabinet.

Class II microbiological safety cabinets

Class II microbiological safety cabinets offer a little more than Class I examples as they offer protection for the sample being worked with in addition to the individual and their environment. There are five different types of Class II cabinet which are categorised based on a number of factors, including their construction, airflow, and exhaust systems. The types of Class II biological safety cabinets are A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1. These are our most popular cabinets as they can be applied to a wide range of uses.

Class III microbiological safety cabinets

Class III microbiological safety cabinets offer the most protection and are therefore the best choice for those working with samples requiring Biosafety Level 4 containment. A Class III cabinet is completely enclosed and designed so that they won’t leak. Rubber gloves are attached to the cabinet so that the sample can be worked with safely, which is why this class of biological safety cabinet is sometimes called a glove box.
